The Classix Concerts series comes back to Bucharest in May with a large-scale European project by Graham Fitkin, bringing together communities from ten countries in an artistic journey centred on trees, biodiversity, and the relationship between people and the natural environment.
The project was conceived as a cycling route of over 4,000 km, starting in Romania and reaching the United Kingdom. Treeline follows a symbolic line of Europe’s forests, from ancient woodland to the fragments that remain in today’s landscape. In each location, local communities, including artists, cultural institutions, schools, universities, and environmental organisations, selected a representative tree and documented its story, context, and significance.
This material, together with field recordings and tree-specific sounds, is integrated by Graham Fitkin into a work for piano, keyscanner, and strings. The instrument becomes a hybrid system, capable of rendering an imagined “forest instrument”, where nature and technology meet.
For Romania, the source of inspiration is Eminescu’s linden tree in Iași, a cultural and symbolic landmark, translated into sound through authentic recordings collected by the Classix community and adapted into new sonic textures by Graham Fitkin.
The result is a layered and immersive composition that explores the relationship between people and the environment, offering a sensitive perspective on the fragility and importance of ecosystems.
From this European journey, the cultural dimension of Central Europe—represented by the immense Czech musical heritage—could not be missing.
Alexia Dănăcică, an important pianist on the national scene, is completing her studies at the National University of Music in Bucharest and will open the evening’s sonic spectrum with the spectacular Sonata 1.X.1905 “From the Street” by Leoš Janáček.

Graham Fitkin (UK) is a composer and pianist associated with minimalist and postminimalist music, particularly known for his works for solo piano and multi-piano ensembles.
He studied at the University of Nottingham and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he worked with composer Louis Andriessen. He has been Composer-in-Residence with the London Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
He has written works for artists and institutions including Yo-Yo Ma, New York City Ballet, BBC Orchestras, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Nederlands Blazersensemble, and Sacconi Quartet. His music has been performed by ensembles such as Piano Circus, for whom he composed works for six pianos, including Log, Line, and Loud.
His works include The Cone Gatherers, one of his best-known piano pieces, Circuit for two pianos and orchestra, and the album Kaplan, inspired by the character in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. He has also composed for the BBC Proms, including PK for orchestra and choir.
Recent projects include Still Warm for harp, created for the Eden Project, and collaborations within the duo FitkinWall, alongside harpist Ruth Wall, exploring unconventional instrumental combinations and extended performance formats.
He has received BASCA Composer Awards, the Royal Philharmonic Composer Award, and the International Grand Prix Dance Music Award.

Alexia Dănăcică is a pianist who completed her high school studies at the “George Enescu” National College of Music, continuing her artistic path at the National University of Music in Bucharest. She is currently a first-year master’s student in the class of Lecturer Dr. Daniel Dascălu.
Throughout her training, she has won numerous prizes at national and international competitions and has participated in masterclasses given by distinguished musicians such as Andrei Gavrilov, Eduard Kunz, Florian Mitrea, Viniciu Moroianu, and Mădălina Pașol.
Her artistic development has also been supported by scholarships such as SoNoRo, MOL Romania, and START, which have provided valuable opportunities for refinement and recognition in the musical field.
