The lecture “The French Vision in Musical Practice” will present the French technique on musical interpretation and practice. Jean-Baptiste Doulcet will present the main notions underlying the French school, including the principles of interpretation, study methods and the role of improvisation. The pianist will explain how these concepts have influenced his own work and will provide examples and insights from his experience.
The lecture will also include the motivations and values that guide French musicians, such as the importance of listening, collaboration and accessibility of music. Participants will better understand what differentiates the French perspective on music and how they can apply these concepts in their individual study.
Jean-Baptiste Doucet is a pianist, improviser and composer of French origin.
He won the 4th prize and the audience prize at the Long Thibaud Competition (chair Martha Argerich) in 2019 and the “Modern Times” prize at the Clara Haskil 2019 (chair Christian Zacharias). He is also the 2nd prize winner at the 8th Nordic Piano Competition and a laureate of the Charles Oulmont Foundation.
Considered one of the rising stars of French piano, alongside Alexandre Kantorow and Rémi Geniet (Classica Magazine), he released his first CD (from a live concert) with works by Beethoven, Schumann and his own improvisations on audience themes (Les Spiriades, 2017). His second album (Schumann and Liszt) was released in 2022 under the Mirare label.
As a composer, he has written over twenty works for solo instruments, chamber music or larger ensembles. The Gewandhaus commissioned his second string quartet, which premiered in Leipzig in 2018; his Piano Trio was performed at the Petit Palais in Paris, and artists such as Raphaël Pidoux of the Wanderer Trio or the Mona Quartet perform his works.
His Passion Trilogy for 12 cellos – on Goethe’s poems – is edited and printed by Alfonce Productions.
Admission to the event is free, and the discussion will be held in English.
